ENGLISH 100: Composition I Composition I is an introduction to the rhetorical, conceptual and stylistic demands of writing at the university level; instruction in composing processes, search strategies, and writing from sources. This course introduces you to different forms of college-level writing and guides you in writing for different purposes and audiences. Your peers and instructor will help you plan, draft, critique, revise, and edit. Expect to compose at least 5000 words of finished prose (20 typewritten pages). You will read and make use of a variety of sources (e.g., books, articles) in expressing your own ideas in writing. As you do so, you will develop important skills in information literacy by learning search strategies, critical evaluation of information, and appropriate ways to incorporate such information into your writing by acknowledging sources and providing citations. If you choose English 100, decide whether a mentored or non-mentored section is for you. You may also consider taking English 100A, an honors section of the course. Please email honors@hawaii.edu for details. Note: Because each English 100 professor uses different books and approaches, check the semester’s section descriptions to choose the section that’s best for you.
