THE COLLECTIONThe "collection" option gives UH Mānoa students the opportunity to earn three credits for English 100 without taking the course. [footnote*] Students will be invited to submit a Collection if they meet one of the following criteria:
Once you receive the invitation letter, it will be your choice whether to submit a collection or not. If you decide to submit a collection, UH Mānoa faculty members will evaluate it. If they determine that the collection shows that you have already achieved the competencies associated with English 100, you will not have to take English 100 and you will receive three academic credits. [Students who receive credit will be charged a $15.00 administrative fee.] [footnote*] If the UH Mānoa faculty evaluators decide that your collection does not meet the English 100 competencies, you will take English 100 or English 100A. Why should I submit a collection? What must the collection include?
WHY SHOULD I SUBMIT A COLLECTION?You are invited to submit a collection because the UH Mānoa faculty believe that you may have already learned most of what is covered in English 100. We ask you to submit a collection of writing because we need to review additional samples of your work to decide if you have already met the English 100 competencies. UH Mānoa students who choose to submit a collection of writing believe they have considerable achievement as writers and could bypass English 100. Saving your writing (or generating new pieces) and writing the cover essay will take considerable time and effort. But if your cover essay and pieces demonstrate achievement of the English 100 competencies, you will not have to take English 100 and you will receive three academic credits [a $15.00 administrative fee will be charged if you receive credits]. For many UH Mānoa students, putting together a collection can be worthwhile. UH MĀNOA COLLECTION CHECKLISTYour collection of writing must include the following:
UH MĀNOA ENGLISH 100 COMPETENCIESThe faculty evaluators will use the English 100 competencies as their guide when reviewing your collection. Your cover letter should explain how the pieces of writing you include in your collection demonstrate that you have achieved the English 100 competencies. English 100 competencies:
DUE DATES FOR YOUR COLLECTIONYou will have approximately six months to submit your collection. Specific due dates will be included with the letter of invitation. The faculty evaluators read collections three times a year: April July, and November. Results will be available approximately two weeks after the submission date.
* IMPORTANT: Check your invitation letter for exact due dates. You may choose to submit your collection by either due date given. WHAT IF I DON'T SUBMIT A COLLECTION?It is your choice to submit a collection. If you decide not to, there is no penalty. You will take English 100 as you normally would.
Footnote* The "Collection" applies to University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) students only. Other UH campuses and community colleges do not accept UHM's evaluation of students' collections. In other words, if you submit a collection and receive credit for English 100, currently that credit will be accepted at UHM only. |
