WRITING REQUIREMENTS FOR UHM STUDENTS

(1) FOUNDATIONS: WRITTEN COMMUNICATION (FW)

UHM APPROVED COURSES-FW
Credit for one of these courses is required for graduation: English (ENG) 100, ENG 101+101L, or English Language Institute (ELI) 100.

Requirement
All UHM students, except those assigned to ELI 073, must complete the ENG 100, ENG 101+101L, or ELI 100 requirement within their first two semesters at the University. Those assigned to ELI 073 must complete the course the semester after placement and their 100-level course the following semester.

Placement
Students are placed into an FW course based on test scores or an alternative method. Click here for more information.

General course descriptions (contact the English department for ENG 100 and ENG 101 section descriptions):

English 100. Composition I (3 credits). Introduction to the rhetorical, conceptual, and stylistic demands of writing at the university level; instruction in composing processes, search strategies, and writing from sources. Students may not earn credit for both ENG 100 and ENG 101.

English Language Institute (ELI) 100. Expository Writing: A Guided Approach (3 credits). Extensive practice in writing expository essays; linguistic devices that make an essay effective. (Fulfills composition requirement for non-native speakers of English only).

English 101. Composition I (3 credits) plus English 101L. Composition I Writing Laboratory (1 non-academic credit). Introduction to the rhetorical, conceptual, and stylistic demands of writing at the university level; instruction in composing processes, search strategies, and writing from sources. Requires supplemental tutorial laboratory: intensive individual instruction in writing at the university level. Students may not earn credit for both ENG 100 and ENG 101.

English Language Institute (ELI) 073. Writing for Foreign Students (3 non-academic credits). Extensive practice in expository writing. Analysis and use of rhetorical devices. Individual conferences and tutoring as required. Prepares students to take ELI 100.

Transfer students can visit the Admissions Office Transfer Credit Search page to check if a course they completed at another college is equivalent to UH Mānoa's ENG 100 or ELI 100. Students who have transfer credit for a course that is officially equivalent to UH Mānoa's ENG 100 or ELI 100 do not take ENG/ELI 100 at UHM.

(2) WRITING-INTENSIVE (W) FOCUS COURSES

Because writing helps students both to learn and to communicate, the University requires students to take writing-intensive courses. Small writing-intensive classes, in which instructors work with students on writing related to course topics, are offered in nearly all departments. Students are strongly encouraged to complete ENG 100, ENG 101, or ELI 100 before they enroll in W courses.

Requirement
Students who entered the UH system as freshmen in Fall 1990 or later must complete, before they graduate from the Mānoa campus, five writing-intensive courses (designated with W in each semester's Schedule of Classes). At least two W courses must be from courses numbered at the 300- or 400-level.

If you entered the UH system prior to 1990, an academic advisor can determine the number of W classes you are required to take.

Transfer students have a pro-rated requirement. See the chart below.

NOTE: "Transfer student" refers to a student who took classes at a non-University of Hawai‘i campus and who is starting at UHM with credits from another school. Therefore, students who took classes at a UH community college, UH West O‘ahu, or UH Hilo are not considered "transfer" students in this context.
